IGSHPA has led the way in developing design and installation standards for Ground Source Heat Pump / Geothermal systems.
IGSHPA provides to its members the 2025 edition of CSA/ANSI/IGSHPA C448 Bi-National American-Canadian Standard at a discounted rate of $175 (regular price is $250). The 2017 IGSHPA Design and Installation Standards have been sunset now that the 2025 edition is available. The latest edition has many new updates and is the basis for all new IGSHPA training. Following are some of the updates to the nearly 250 page standard:
- New section on District Energy Systems*
- New section on Energy Foundations / Energy Piles
- New annex on Waste Water Energy Transfer Systems
- New PE-RT piping material added
- New glycerin-based antifreeze and detoxified ethylene glycol added as acceptable heat transfer fluids
- Consolidation of clauses that appear in more than one section (moved to the General section) for ease of use and clarity
- Removal of PVC as an acceptable piping material for inside piping
- Validation of references used in clauses throughout the standard
- Review of IGSHPA Standards Committee recommendations for changes to the standard that allowed the 2017 IGSHPA standard to be sunset
*There are several references in the “District Energy Systems” section to “Phetteplace et al, 2013 and 2019”. Those references may be found on the ASHRAE Bookstore. The District Heating Guide is the 2013 reference and the the District Cooling Guide is the 2019 reference.

IGSHPA Design and Installation Standards
The 2017 IGSHPA Standards have been sunset now that the 2025 addition of the C448 design and installation standard is available (see above). Downloads should be used for reference only, as the new C448 standard is the IGSHPA Design and Installation Standard at this time.
