Instructor-Led Workshop

GSHP Residential System Design Workshop

This in-person, instructor-led workshop is designed for participants who have competed the Core Courses (NOTE: pricing is for non-members; IGSHPA members receive a 25% discount) or have a solid understanding of the concepts they cover. The workshop builds on the knowledge to help you apply a comprehensive process for designing residential GSHP systems.

Use the Self-assessment Tool to help determine which core courses should be taken before attending the two-day instructor-led course.

Learn more about the Residential Design Program prerequisites and professional development path at the CSA website.

Target Audience:

  • Professional Engineers
  • Mechanical Engineers
  • Engineering Technologists
  • Contractors – General/Mechanical/HVAC
  • Civil/Geological Engineers
  • Utilities/Government Employees

Workshop Duration: In-person 1.5 days, or virtually 3 half-days

Learning Objectives:

  • Integrate key design factors such as energy efficiency, maintenance, cost-effectiveness, and local resources into the design of GSHP systems to optimize performance and sustainability.
  • Analyze building load components and their impact on energy consumption to converge on the best estimate of the cooling and heating requirements to inform the GSHP system design.
  • Design and specify appropriate ground heat exchanger (GHX) systems based on estimated formation thermal properties.
  • Select and integrate heat pumps with the distribution piping system, consider proper placement of piping materials, and evaluate alternative designs for better system performance, including cost-competitive options to conventional residential HVAC equipment.
  • Incorporate industry standards and best practices in the design process, including equipment and piping requirements, pump power benchmarks, and efficiency calculations.

Pricing shown on the CSA Store is for non-members; IGSHPA members receive a 25% discount (except the exam fee). Learn more about the Residential Design Program prerequisites and professional development path at the CSA website.

IMPORTANT NOTES:

  1. IGSHPA members are eligible for a 25% discount coupon (except exam fee). Check out membership options at the IGSHPA membership page.
  2. All of the training is based upon the CSA/ANSI/IGSHPA C448:25 Series Design and Installation Standard for Commercial and Residential GSHP Applications. It is highly recommended that you purchase the standard before starting the training. IGSHPA members can purchase a licensed PDF at a substantial discount on the IGSHPA Standards page.
  3. Current IGSHPA CRD (Certified Residential Designer) or AI (Accredited Installer) certified individuals may take the exam without taking the courses if desired. Contact IGSHPA for the 25% discount coupon if interested. Note that it is very difficult to pass the exam without knowledge of the C448 standard (see note 2 for link).
  4. Certification is for five (5) years. For certification requirements and recertification, review the guidebook (link to CSA).
